A letter from Max

13 Shaky Drive
Christchurch

Dear Room 10

Hello everyone!!  I have finally got back from Antarctica, where I have been learning about the formation of ice.  I got Brett to take a photo of me at Scott Base.  Did you see it in his photo file?

Scott Base is the NZ science base in Antarctica.  It is on Ross Island in the Ross Sea.  You could look it up on Google Maps, or in an atlas, or look on the globe.  During the winter a lot of the Ross Sea freezes over with thick ice.  It is very hard and compacted, so you can land an aeroplane on it.  That is how I got here:  in a plane that flew from Christchurch.  In the summer some of the ice melts and breaks off, so you have to be really careful not to fall in any cracks on the ice shelf.

While I was there Brett took me further north to Mario Zuchelli, which is a science base run by the Italian government.  I made a new Italian friend whose name is Luca Milano.  We spent some time together watching the penguins, exploring the ice on skidoo’s, and eating pizza.  I am sending you some photo’s to put on your wall so you can see us in action!!

Anyway, I had a wonderful time.  I was VERY lucky to be able to go to Antarctica, because not many people get to go there.  Now I am back in NZ and looking forward to seeing my family and coming back to Firth School.  I am also looking forward to being warm!!

I hope you are all liking being in Room 10 this year and already learning new things.  Perhaps you could write to me soon and tell me what is special about Firth School – and especially telling me about yourself.

Bye for now
Love from Max
