Roger

Roger is a big, fat, fluffy, ginger cat.  He lives in Hamilton with his owners, Ngaire and Norman, who are bee keepers.  Roger likes children, but he doesn't like adults.  He lets children pick him up.  He purrs and rubs around their legs, but when an adult comes past he hisses and scratches and grabs their legs.

One day the kiwifruit orchard owner at Katikati rang Ngaire and Norman to see if they would bring their hives over to help pollinate the fruit flowers.  Ngaire and Norman collected their hives at night, because that's when all the bees are back in their home, and took them back to Hamilton for the day, ready to travel to Katikati the next night.  Roger thought "What's going on here?" and jumped up on the truck to explore.  He found a warm sunny spot, curled up and went to sleep.  That night Ngaire and Norman put the cover over the hives and set off for Katikati.

When they got there they went inside to have a cup of tea before they unloaded the hives.  While they were talking there was a large commotion outside and someone yelled out "Quick, come out.  There is a big, ginger, angry cat out here and we can't catch him".  Ngaire and Norman looked at each other.  "Oh, no.  Roger" they said.  They rushed out, but because Roger didn't like adults, no-one could catch him.  The orchard owners woke up their children, who came out in their pyjamas, called Roger - and up he came, purring and rubbing against their legs.  They picked him up, put him in the truck cab, and once the hives had been unloaded, he sat in the front seat all the way back to Hamilton!!

Here are our Roger pictures:
