Litterless Lunch Boxes

Nicole, from Zero Waste, came to visit us this week to help us learn about keeping our lunch boxes litter free.  We decided that we would have to be the teachers and help our parents learn how to reduce all the waste that has to go to the landfill as a result of what they put in our lunch boxes.

During the week we collected all the litter from our own lunch boxes and counted how much we had - including all the food that was uneaten - just so our Mums and Dads knew.  We took our own litter home on Friday in a big bag, along with our information and a note about how long it takes for things to decompose, and ideas about how we could reduce our litter:

buy big bags of chips, raisons etc and put a few of these into our segmented lunch box (with no wrappings
make ( or buy) large containers of yoghurt/dairy food and put small amounts into reusable little containers
ONE treat food per day
compost fruit skins
make our own jelly and put it in a reusable container
put a slice of cheese and some crackers into our segmented lunchbox
use reusable plastic drink bottles instead of individual milk/juice cartons
wrap sandwiches in reusable cloth or ziplock bags that can be washed and reused - or just put into our segmented lunch box unwrapped
Going on a lunch litter hunt
